Honne, formed in 2014 in Bow, London, consists of James Hatcher, who handles production, and Andy Clutterbuck, who serves as singer and producer. The duo adopted their name from the Japanese word “honne,” signifying true feelings and desires, which reflects their artistic approach of infusing electronic music with soulful pop nuances. Their work has been described as “futuristic soul,” aimed at redefining contemporary music.
The duo’s initial releases included the debut single “Warm on a Cold Night” in September 2014, followed by their second EP, “All in the Value,” in November of the same year. They made their live debut at the Sebright Arms. In 2015, they continued to build their presence by releasing the “Coastal Love” EP on their self-established label, Tatemae Recordings. This period also saw them perform sold-out shows in London and participate in various festivals across the UK and Europe, including The Great Escape Festival, Field Day, and Latitude. Their participation in BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend further elevated their profile.
Honne released their debut studio album, “Warm on a Cold Night,” on July 22, 2016. This album gained substantial international recognition, particularly in Asia, where it achieved multi-platinum certifications in South Korea, Thailand, and Indonesia. Following this success, they undertook extensive tours between late 2016 and mid-2017, performing at major festivals such as Coachella, Lollapalooza, Osheaga, and Wanderland in Asia, Europe, and North America. Their second album, “Love Me/Love Me Not,” was released on August 24, 2018, featuring collaborations with artists like Tom Misch and Georgia, and further solidified their global reach with additional multi-platinum and gold certifications. Notable tracks from this album include “Location Unknown,” which garnered over 126 million YouTube views and 92 million Spotify streams, and was later featured in the film “Ali & Ratu Ratu Queens.” Their third studio album, “Let’s Just Say the World Ended a Week from Now, What Would You Do?”, was released in October 2021, and their fourth album, “OUCH,” was released in September 2024.
