France IAM is a pioneering French hip hop group from Marseille, known for incorporating Egyptian and Middle Eastern influences into their music and collaborating with global artists.
French Ligue 1 club Olympique de Marseille (OM) teamed up with music giant BMG to launch a record label focused on hip hop, rap, and R&B, aptly called OM Records.
IAM has a long history of collaborations with the American Hip Hop group, the Wu-Tang Clan. This includes sampling an Inspectah Deck lyric in their 1998 single 'Petit frère' and featuring Wu-Tang affiliated artists on their 1997 single 'La saga' and Method Man and Redman on their 2004 single 'Noble Art'. RZA also featured IAM in his song 'Seul face à lui'.
Universal Music Thailand and IAM Records partnered to launch LYRA. This is part of a broader trend of record labels empowering rising artists.
IAM curated the album for Luc Besson's film, which featured some of IAM's own music, as well as rap and R&B artists from Marseille.
IAM collaborated with US rapper Lucas on the song 'Spin The Globe', which featured rappers from 5 different countries rapping in 5 different languages.
IAM, a French hip hop group originating from Marseille, was formed in 1989. The group consists of Akhenaton (Philippe Fragione), Shurik’n (Geoffroy Mussard), Khéops (Éric Mazel), Imhotep (Pascal Perez), and Kephren (François Mendy). Early in their career, IAM developed a distinct rap style by blending French beats and lyrics with Middle Eastern and Egyptian cultural elements. Their stage names often reflect this influence, such as Khéops, an allusion to an Egyptian pharaoh. This thematic approach allowed the group to establish a unique identity within the French music scene and subtly address social and cultural issues.
Throughout their career, IAM has released numerous albums and singles, achieving significant commercial and critical success. Their 1991 album, “…De la planète Mars,” marked them as the first French hip hop group to release an album. A major milestone arrived in 1994 with their single “Je danse le Mia,” which sampled George Benson’s “Give Me the Night” and reached number one on the French charts. The music video for this single was directed by future Oscar winner Michel Gondry. In 1997, they released “L’École du micro d’argent,” an album that included the popular single “Petit frère,” which sampled a Wu-Tang Clan lyric. This album went on to achieve Platinum certification in both France and Switzerland, further solidifying their influential standing in the hip hop genre.
IAM’s collaborations extend internationally, notably with American hip hop artists. They have featured Wu-Tang Clan members Method Man and Redman on their 2004 single “Noble Art” and were included on a compilation by RZA. These collaborations highlight their global reach and shared artistic vision. The group has consistently addressed themes of African heritage and identity in their music, including historical subjects like slavery in their 1991 song “Les tam-tam de l’Afrique.” Their career trajectory demonstrates a commitment to artistic integrity and social commentary, maintaining relevance in the French and international music landscape over several decades.
