IAM is a pioneering French hip hop group from Marseille, known for incorporating Egyptian and Middle Eastern influences into their music and collaborating with global artists. After releasing their groundbreaking debut album …De la planète Mars in 1991, establishing them as the first French hip hop group to release an album, IAM went on to define a distinct rap style by blending French beats and lyrics with Middle Eastern and Egyptian cultural elements. This thematic approach allowed the group, comprised of Akhenaton, Shurik’n, Khéops, Imhotep, and Kephren, to establish a unique identity within the French music scene. A major milestone arrived in 1994 with their single ‘Je danse le Mia,’ which sampled George Benson’s ‘Give Me the Night’ and achieved number one on the French charts.

The group continued their prolific output with albums such as Revoir un printemps (2003) and Saison 5 (2007), consistently addressing themes of African heritage, identity, and social commentary, including historical subjects like slavery in their 1991 song ‘Les tam-tam de l’Afrique.’ IAM’s international collaborations expanded significantly, notably featuring Wu-Tang Clan members Method Man and Redman on their 2004 single ‘Noble Art.’ Their global reach and shared artistic vision were further recognized with their inclusion on a compilation by RZA. The group maintained a steady stream of releases through the 2010s, including Arts Martiens (2013), Rêvolution (2017), and Yasuke (2019), each album continuing to evolve their signature sound while maintaining their commitment to lyrical depth and cultural exploration. Most recently, IAM has released Rimes essentielles in 2021 and HHHistory in 2023, showcasing their enduring relevance and artistic integrity within the French and international music landscape over several decades.
