Information Society had the first collaboration between THX and a musical artist, showcasing their pioneering approach in integrating technology and music.
Information Society, also known as InSoc, formed in 1982 in Saint Paul, Minnesota. The band was initially active from 1982 to 1997, primarily featuring Paul Robb, James Cassidy, and Kurt Harland Larson. Their early work included avant-garde electronic music with elements of hip hop, dub, and electro. The group’s name, InSoc, was partly inspired by Ingsoc, a term from George Orwell’s novel “Nineteen Eighty-Four.” In 1983, the band independently released “The InSoc EP” and “Creatures of Influence,” laying the groundwork for their distinctive sound and future commercial success.
Their breakout single, “What’s on Your Mind (Pure Energy),” released in 1988, achieved significant commercial success, spending 39 weeks on the dance chart and reaching number one. It also peaked at number three on the Hot 100 pop chart. This track notably incorporated a vocal sample of Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) from “Star Trek.” The band’s self-titled major debut album, “Information Society” (1988), also produced a Top 10 Billboard entry with “Walking Away.” This album sold out its initial pressing in the United States within two weeks and was certified Gold within five months of its release. The band was honored with a star on the outside mural of the Minneapolis nightclub First Avenue, acknowledging their significant cultural contribution.
Following their initial success, Information Society continued to release albums such as “Hack” (1990) and “Peace and Love, Inc.” (1992), with “Hack” featuring the top 40 hit “Think.” The group disbanded in 1997 after releasing “Don’t Be Afraid,” an album that showcased a more industrial sound from Kurt Harland. Robb and Cassidy reconvened the band in 2006, with Harland rejoining as lead vocalist by 2008. The classic lineup of Harland, Cassidy, and Robb reformed to release new material, including “Hello World” (2014), “Orders of Magnitude” (2016), and “ODDfellows” (2021), continuing their legacy in electronic music.
