The Strumbellas have a label distribution partnership with Universal Music Canada.
The Strumbellas formed in Lindsay, Ontario, in 2008, with initial members Simon Ward (vocals, guitar), David Ritter (vocals, keys), Jon Hembrey (lead guitar), Isabel Ritchie (violin), Darryl James (bass guitar), and Jeremy Drury (drums). The band’s formation involved a call for additional musicians through Craigslist, which led to Ritter and Ritchie joining. Their self-titled EP in 2009 received positive reviews, leading to an ongoing residency at Toronto’s Cameron House. In 2010, they performed at prominent venues including Yonge-Dundas Square and the Horseshoe Tavern. Their debut full-length album, “My Father and the Hunter,” released independently in 2012, garnered a nomination for a 2013 Juno Award in the Roots & Traditional Album of the Year – Group category.
The group signed with Six Shooter Records and released their second album, “We Still Move on Dance Floors,” in 2013, produced by Ryan Hadlock. This album secured a 2014 Juno Award in the Roots & Traditional Album of the Year – Group category. Their third studio album, “Hope,” released on April 22, 2016, featured the single “Spirits,” which topped the Billboard Alternative Songs chart in May 2016 and received widespread radio play internationally. The band performed “Spirits” on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on April 21, 2016, and also at the NHL Heritage Classic in Winnipeg on October 23, 2016. “Spirits” later won the 2017 Juno Award for Single of the Year.
The fourth studio album, “Rattlesnake,” was released on March 29, 2019, with the lead single “Salvation” performed on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” on April 3, 2019. In September 2019, the Liberal Party of Canada adopted their song “One Hand Up” as a campaign anthem for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, leading to a French version of the song also being produced. In March 2022, Simon Ward transitioned to a behind-the-scenes role, with Jimmy Chauveau becoming the new lead vocalist. The band released the single “Hold Me” on October 4, 2023, followed by their album “Part Time Believer” on February 9, 2024. They embarked on a US tour for the new album on April 4, 2025, and released the singles “Hard Lines” on July 18, 2025, and “Maybe It’s Me,” before releasing the EP “Burning Bridges into Dust” on October 21, 2025.
