J Mascis is a musician and songwriter known for his influential contributions to alternative rock as the singer, guitarist, and primary songwriter for Dinosaur Jr. After forming Dinosaur Jr. in 1984, J Mascis went on to establish himself as an influential force in alternative rock, serving as the band’s singer, guitarist, and primary songwriter. Having previously honed his skills in the hardcore punk scene with Deep Wound alongside Lou Barlow in the early 1980s, Mascis transitioned to guitar and vocals to define Dinosaur Jr.’s distinctive sound.

A significant milestone occurred in 2005 with the reformation of the original Dinosaur Jr. lineup, delighting fans globally. Post-reformation, Mascis continued his extensive output, balancing Dinosaur Jr. commitments with solo work and collaborations.

In 2005, he released ‘J and Friends Sing and Chant for Amma,’ followed by the self-titled album ‘Witch’ with his band Witch in 2006. Dinosaur Jr. released ‘Beyond’ in 2007 and ‘Farm’ in 2009, reinforcing their enduring appeal. Mascis’ solo career further blossomed with ‘Several Shades of Why’ in 2011, and he collaborated on ‘Heavy Blanket’ with Heavy Blanket in 2012.

That same year, Dinosaur Jr. released ‘I Bet on Sky,’ followed by his solo album ‘Tied to a Star’ in 2014. His recent contributions include Dinosaur Jr.’s ‘Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not’ in 2016 and ‘Unwilling to Explain’ with Unknown Instructors in 2019. Dinosaur Jr.

further expanded their discography with ‘Sweep It Into Space’ in 2021, demonstrating their sustained creative vitality. Most recently, J Mascis released his solo album, ‘What Do We Do Now,’ in 2024, continuing to captivate audiences with his distinctive guitar work and songwriting prowess.
