Born Shawn Corey Carter on December 4, 1969, in Brooklyn, New York City, Jay-Z grew up in Marcy Houses, a public housing project. His father abandoned the family when he was 11, and he was raised by his mother, Gloria Carter, alongside his three older siblings. During his youth, after dropping out of Trenton Central High School, he was involved in selling crack cocaine. His early musical influences came from his parents’ soul music collection. He began his musical career in the late 1980s as a protégé of fellow New York City-based rapper Jaz-O. Early recordings feature his contributions and he gained wider recognition on the posse cut “Show and Prove” from Big Daddy Kane’s 1994 album. In 1995, with no major label deal, he co-founded Roc-A-Fella Records with Damon “Dame” Dash and Kareem “Biggs” Burke.
His debut album, “Reasonable Doubt,” released in 1996 through Roc-A-Fella Records via a distribution deal with Priority, reached number 23 on the Billboard 200 and later achieved platinum status. This success was followed by “In My Lifetime, Vol. 1” (1997), after securing a deal with Def Jam. His album “Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life” (1998) became his first to top the Billboard 200 and earned him a Grammy, selling over five million copies and featuring hit singles like “Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem).” He continued to release successful albums, including “Vol. 3… Life and Times of S. Carter” (1999) and “The Dynasty: Roc La Familia” (2000), which further established his reputation and introduced new producers like The Neptunes and Kanye West. In 2001, he released “The Blueprint” on September 11, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and was later selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry.
From 2004 to 2007, Jay-Z served as president and chief executive officer of Def Jam Recordings, a significant role that involved overseeing the careers of artists like Rihanna and Ne-Yo. He announced a “retirement” from recording new studio albums with “The Black Album” (2003), though he remained active with collaborations, tours, and business ventures. In 2006, he returned with “Kingdom Come” and followed in 2007 with “American Gangster,” which were commercially successful. In 2008, he founded Roc Nation, an entertainment company encompassing a record label, talent agency, and music publishing. Collaborations with Kanye West on “Watch the Throne” (2011) and his wife Beyoncé on “Everything Is Love” (2018) yielded multiple Grammy Awards. By 2019, Jay-Z became the first hip-hop artist to achieve billionaire status through a diverse portfolio of business interests, including Rocawear, 40/40 Club, Tidal, and Marcy Venture Partners. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2017 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021.
