Jesus Piece, an American metalcore band, was formed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 2015. The band’s initial lineup included Aaron Heard on vocals, David Updike and John DiStefano on guitars, Anthony Marinaro on bass, and Luis Aponte on drums. In their early years, Jesus Piece self-released their first demo/EP in 2015, followed by another self-released EP in the summer of 2016. In 2017, they released a split EP with Malice at the Palace through Bridge Nine Records, establishing their presence in the hardcore scene. Their musical style was influenced by brutal and old-school death metal, punk, and hardcore, evolving to what Aaron Heard described as unique metallic hardcore. Critics such as Pitchfork characterized their sound as a fusion of hardcore, death metal, industrial, and 90s metalcore, noting their experimental approach within the genre.
The band signed with Southern Lord Records in 2018, releasing their debut full-length album, “Only Self,” on August 24 of that year. This period saw them touring with acts like Code Orange, Knocked Loose, and Ghostemane. Following this success, in December 2022, Jesus Piece released the single “An Offering to the Night.” They then announced their sophomore LP, “…So Unknown,” which was released on April 14, 2023, through Century Media Records. This album was accompanied by singles such as “Gates of Horn” and “Tunnel Vision.” After the release of “…So Unknown,” bassist Anthony Marinaro departed from the band in 2023 to focus on personal business ventures. Jesus Piece joined Obituary, Jinjer, and Sepultura for the European leg of Sepultura’s farewell tour in late 2024.
On August 26, 2025, a statement from David Updike, John Distefano, and Luis Aponte confirmed that “Jesus Piece has been dead for some time,” indicating the band had officially ended. The statement also mentioned that any ongoing activities under the name “Je$us Piece” by vocalist Aaron Heard were not associated with the original band’s work over the preceding 10 years. Heard subsequently formed a spin-off band, Je$us Piece, which was slated to perform at the One Big Party Fest in Phoenix, Arizona, in October 2025, but was later replaced by Show Me the Body.
