Kacey Lee Musgraves, born on August 21, 1988, in Sulphur Springs, Texas, began her musical journey at an early age. She started writing songs at eight, with her first song, “Notice Me,” composed for her elementary school graduation. Musgraves learned to play the mandolin and later the guitar at age 12 from a local musician, John DeFoore. Her early career included performing western swing music at local festivals with her mother, forming the country-music duo Texas Two Bits, and releasing an independent album in 2000. She also won national yodeling championships and performed the national anthem at the 2002 Winter Olympics. At 14, she self-released her first solo album, and in 2006, after graduating from Mineola High School, she moved to Austin, where she took various jobs, including performing as Hannah Montana for children’s parties. In 2007, she competed on the fifth season of USA Network’s singing competition, Nashville Star, finishing in seventh place.
Musgraves continued to develop her artistry, recording three self-produced albums between 2002 and 2007. In 2008, she recorded two songs for the independent label Triple Pop, and in 2010, she collaborated with the Josh Abbott Band on “Oh, Tonight.” Her career saw a significant turning point in 2012 when she signed with Mercury Nashville. She released her debut solo single, “Merry Go ‘Round,” which was featured on her major-label debut album, “Same Trailer Different Park,” released on March 19, 2013. This album, which she co-produced and co-wrote, debuted at number two on the charts and earned her a Grammy Award for Best Country Album at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards. The album also featured hit singles like “Blowin’ Smoke” and “Follow Your Arrow.” The latter was recognized by Rolling Stone as one of the 100 Greatest Country Songs of All Time, highlighting Musgraves’ progressive approach to country music. In 2013, she co-wrote Miranda Lambert’s single “Mama’s Broken Heart” and provided harmony vocals.
Her second studio album, “Pageant Material,” released in 2015, debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 and produced successful singles such as “Biscuits” and “Dime Store Cowgirl.” In 2016, she released a Christmas-themed album, “A Very Kacey Christmas,” and her fourth studio album, “Golden Hour,” released in 2018, received widespread critical acclaim, winning all four of its nominated Grammy categories, including Album of the Year and Best Country Album. The singles “Space Cowboy” and “Butterflies” also earned Grammy awards. Her fifth album, “Star-Crossed,” was released in 2021, and her collaboration with Zach Bryan on “I Remember Everything” in 2023 topped the Billboard Hot 100 and won a Grammy for Best Country Duo/Group Performance. Her sixth studio album, “Deeper Well,” released in 2024, peaked at number two on the Billboard 200, with its single “The Architect” winning the Grammy Award for Best Country Song.
