About

Human Nature originated in Sydney, Australia, in late 1989. The quartet was formed by Toby Allen, Phil Burton, and brothers Andrew and Michael Tierney, who were schoolmates. Initially known as The 4 Trax, they started as a doo-wop group, performing street shows and winning talent competitions. Their early days involved singing a cappella arrangements of Motown hits, which laid the foundation for their signature vocal style. In 1995, the group rebranded as Human Nature, signing with Sony Music Australia after an a cappella audition for CEO Denis Handlin.

Their debut album, “Telling Everybody,” was released in 1996, featuring hit singles “Got It Goin’ On,” “Tellin’ Everybody,” and “Wishes,” with “Wishes” earning their first platinum certification. The group gained significant exposure by opening for international artists like Celine Dion on her Falling Into You Around the World Tour in 1996 and 1997, and for Michael Jackson on his HIStory World Tour in 1996 and 1997. Their second album, “Counting Down” (1999), debuted at number one on the ARIA charts and featured six top 40 hits. This established them as a prominent Australian act, leading to collaborations with artists such as John Farnham and appearances at major events like the 2000 Summer Olympics opening ceremony.

A significant turning point for Human Nature was their shift towards Motown covers, beginning with “Reach Out: The Motown Record” in 2005. This album achieved number one status in Australia and garnered six-times platinum certification. The success led to a series of Motown-themed albums and tours, culminating in a limited Las Vegas residency in May 2009 at the Imperial Palace. This residency, later extended and moved to the Venetian Hotel and Casino, solidified their international presence. In 2019, Human Nature was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame and each member received the Medal of the Order of Australia, recognizing their contributions to the performing arts over three decades, marked by over 1.6 million records sold in Australia by 2011.
