Metal Church

Metal Church originated in 1980 in San Francisco, California, led by guitarist and songwriter Kurdt Vanderhoof. The band soon relocated to Aberdeen, Washington, and briefly operated under the name Shrapnel in 1981. This early period included future Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich briefly auditioning. The band released the instrumental demo “Red Skies” in 1981. After reforming with guitarist Craig Wells, bassist Duke Erickson, drummer Kirk Arrington, and vocalist David Wayne, they released the demo “Four Hymns.” The group readopted the Metal Church moniker in 1983, integrating into the burgeoning Seattle heavy metal scene and becoming recognized as pioneers in thrash, speed, and power metal.

In July 1984, Metal Church released their self-titled debut album, which included tracks from their “Four Hymns” demo. This album sold 70,000 copies independently before the band signed with Elektra Records, reportedly at the urging of Metallica members Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield. Their second studio album, “The Dark,” released in October 1986, achieved commercial success, with its music video for “Watch the Children Pray” receiving airplay on MTV. The album reached the U.S. Billboard 200 chart and was supported by an extensive world tour where they shared stages with prominent acts such as Metallica, King Diamond, and Slayer. Despite initial success, lineup changes began shortly after, with Vanderhoof transitioning to composition only by 1986, and vocalist David Wayne also departing, leading to the recruitment of Mike Howe and John Marshall.

The lineup featuring Mike Howe and John Marshall continued the band’s trajectory, releasing “Blessing in Disguise” in 1989, which became their highest-charting album on the Billboard 200 at the time, reaching number 75. The song “Badlands” was featured on MTV’s Headbangers Ball, further cementing their popularity. Throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, Metal Church toured extensively, supporting major bands and releasing additional albums like “The Human Factor” (1991) and “Hanging in the Balance” (1993). Despite several hiatuses and lineup changes, including the tragic passing of vocalists David Wayne and Mike Howe, Kurdt Vanderhoof has remained the consistent creative force, guiding the band through various iterations and the release of their thirteenth studio album, “Congregation of Annihilation,” in 2023.
