Kesha Rose Sebert was born on March 1, 1987, in Los Angeles, California. Her mother, Pebe Sebert, was a singer-songwriter. Growing up, Kesha often accompanied her mother to recording studios and was encouraged to sing. The family faced financial challenges, relying on welfare payments and food stamps. She attended Franklin High School and Brentwood High School, where she played the trumpet and saxophone. At 17, she left school to pursue music after being encouraged by Max Martin, later earning her GED. She reportedly received a scholarship offer to Barnard College but opted to focus on her music career. She co-wrote songs with her mother and was in a band with her brother, Lagan.
Kesha signed with Prescription Songs in 2005. She provided background vocals for Paris Hilton’s “Nothing in This World” and later formed a management agreement with DAS Communications Inc. During this period, she worked with various writers and producers, co-writing “This Love” for The Veronicas. She stylized her name as ‘Ke$ha’ as an ironic comment on materialism while experiencing financial struggles. In 2008, she appeared in Katy Perry’s music video for “I Kissed a Girl” and contributed background vocals to Britney Spears’ “Lace and Leather.” Her breakthrough came in 2009 with an uncredited feature on Flo Rida’s number-one single, “Right Round,” which garnered her initial mainstream exposure.
Her debut album, “Animal,” was released in 2010 after six years of developing material. The album’s lead single, “Tik Tok,” broke sales records in the United States and became one of the best-selling digital singles globally. Subsequent singles from “Animal,” including “Blah Blah Blah,” “Your Love Is My Drug,” and “Take It Off,” also achieved top-ten positions in multiple countries. In 2010, she was featured on two more top-ten singles: “Dirty Picture” by Taio Cruz and “My First Kiss” by 3OH!3. In November 2010, the “Cannibal” EP was released, featuring the chart-topping single “We R Who We R.” By June 2011, Kesha had accumulated significant digital single sales. She launched her first headlining world tour, the Get Sleazy Tour, in 2011 and was recognized with the MTV Europe Music Award for Best New Act in 2010. Over her career, Kesha has continued to release music, tour, and engage in various projects, including launching her own record label, Kesha Records, in partnership with ADA (Warner Music Group).
