Kimberly Kay Richey, born on December 1, 1956, in Zanesville, Ohio, and raised in Kettering, Ohio, began her music career in the 1990s. She secured her first recording contract with Mercury Nashville at the age of 37. Her self-titled debut album was released in May 1995, produced by Richard Bennett. This was followed by “Bitter Sweet” in 1997 and “Glimmer” in 1999. In this period, she toured alongside artists such as Wynonna Judd. Richey gained recognition for her songwriting as her compositions were recorded by other artists. Trisha Yearwood recorded “Believe Me Baby (I Lied)”, Radney Foster recorded “Nobody Wins”, and Brooks & Dunn recorded “Every River”.
Her career progressed with subsequent album releases, including “Rise” in 2002, “Chinese Boxes” in 2007 (recorded in London and produced by Giles Martin), and “Wreck Your Wheels” in 2010. In 2013, she released “Thorn in My Heart,” featuring Trisha Yearwood as a guest vocalist. An acoustic version, “Thorn in My Heart: The Work Tapes,” followed in 2014. Richey continued to release music, with “Edgeland” in 2018 and “Every New Beginning” in 2024. Throughout her career, she has consistently been involved in songwriting collaborations, contributing to albums by artists such as the Dixie Chicks, Patty Loveless, and Mindy McCready. She has also provided contributed vocals for a range of artists, including Ryan Adams and Jason Isbell.
