Elmer Lee Fields, born on April 26, 1950, in Wilson, North Carolina, developed an early passion for music. At 17, he moved to New York to pursue a musical career, adopting the nickname “Little JB” due to his vocal and physical similarities to James Brown. He later settled in Plainfield, New Jersey. Fields began his recording career in 1969 with the single “Bewildered” b/w “Tell Her I Love Her” on the Bedford label. Throughout the 1970s, he released several singles on various labels, including London Records and SoundPlus, culminating in his first full-length album, “Let’s Talk It Over,” with Angle 3 in 1979.
The 1980s saw a shift in the music industry with the rise of disco, which impacted Fields’ career. During this period, he transitioned into real estate in Newark, New Jersey, to support his family. The 1990s marked his return to music, focusing on soul-blues within the Southern circuit. He signed with Mississippi-based Ace Records, releasing albums such as “Enough Is Enough,” “Coming to Tear the Roof Down” (1995), and “Dreaming Big Time” (1996), where he also contributed on keyboards and synthesizers. Following his time with Ace, Fields signed with Desco Records.
From 2009 to the present, Lee Fields revitalized his career with The Expressions. Their collaborative albums include “My World” (2009), “Faithful Man” (2012), “Emma Jean” (2014), “Special Night” (2017), and “It Rains Love” (2019). His work has gained recognition beyond traditional soul circles, with his songs being sampled by R&B and hip-hop artists like J. Cole and Travis Scott and featured in various television shows and films such as “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” “American Dad,” and “Magic Mike XXL.” In 2022, Fields released “Sentimental Fool” with Daptone Records, showcasing his enduring presence in soul music.
