Leon Patillo’s musical journey began in his childhood, where a keen teacher recognized his talent and encouraged his mother to buy a piano. This pivotal moment set the stage for Leon to become a significant figure in Contemporary Christian Music, infusing his work with the funk and soul that characterized his upbringing. He first showcased his talents in a youth choir and later formed his Bay area band, Leon’s Creation, which gained attention for its unique blend of Motown and Rock and Roll, leading to a record deal with Atlantic Records and performances alongside major bands like Rare Earth and War.
His breakthrough came when Carlos Santana, impressed by Leon’s vocal and keyboard skills, invited him to join his iconic band as the lead vocalist. From 1973 to 1976, Leon toured extensively with Santana, performing in front of large audiences across the globe. He contributed to several albums, including Borboletta and Festival, where his songwriting flourished with tracks like “Try a Little Harder” and co-writing on hits such as “Let the Children Play.”
After a period of introspection and spiritual exploration, Leon transitioned to Christian pop music, signing with Maranatha Music and later Word Records. His debut album, Dance Children Dance, launched a successful career in the 1980s, with multiple chart-topping hits and a reputation for his energetic, dance/funk style of worship music. He became a sought-after performer, headlining numerous shows and captivating audiences with his dynamic stage presence.
In addition to his music career, Leon hosted the talk show Leon & Friends on TBN, where he engaged with R&B legends and shared his passion for foster parenting. His commitment to uplifting others continued through his involvement with Get Motivated Seminars and the establishment of the S.I.N.G. foundation in Las Vegas, aimed at inspiring youth. Leon’s recent endeavors include the release of his book, Hidden Treasures in Your Field, and his album Sing Along With Leon, showcasing his enduring dedication to spreading joy and encouragement through music.
