Marc Pickering’s acting career began at the age of eight, portraying the Artful Dodger in a community playhouse production of “Oliver Twist” in Garforth, Leeds. He continued to participate in various amateur productions with St Marys Youth Theatre, including “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “West Side Story.” Pickering also trained in Jazz and Tap with the Northern Theatre Company in Hull, where he performed in shows such as “Chicago” and “Rocky Horror Show.” At ten, he joined the National Youth Music Theatre, performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival for four years in productions like “Tin Pan Ali” and “Bugsy Malone.” The latter transferred to the Queens Theatre in London, marking his West End debut. This early exposure led to his role as Young Masbath in Tim Burton’s “Sleepy Hollow” (1999) alongside Johnny Depp, a significant turning point in his career.
After “Sleepy Hollow,” Pickering returned to his education, completing his GCSEs and A-levels while continuing to perform with the Northern Theatre Company. During his college years, he filmed roles in “Calendar Girls” (2003) and “The Queen of Sheba’s Pearls” (2004). He then pursued formal acting training at the Guildford School of Acting, graduating in July 2006. Post-graduation, Pickering maintained a consistent presence in the entertainment industry. He played Montparnasse in Tom Hooper’s “Les Misérables” (2012) and was cast as a young Enoch “Nucky” Thompson in the fifth season of HBO’s critically acclaimed series “Boardwalk Empire” (2014).
His career also includes extensive stage work, such as playing Joseph Merrick in “The Elephant Man” and Abanazar in “Aladdin” at the Milton Keynes Theatre (2015-2016). In 2023, he took on multiple roles in “Bleak Expectations” at London’s Criterion Theatre, and in 2026, he was cast as Adonis in Mischief Theatre’s “Thespians: Greece The Musical (But Not That One).” Pickering has also lent his voice to video games like “Cyberpunk 2077” (2020) and “Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty” (2023), demonstrating his versatility across different mediums.
