Matthew Joseph West was born on April 25, 1977, in Downers Grove, Illinois. Despite initially aspiring to a baseball career, he accepted a four-year music scholarship at Millikin University, ultimately leading him to pursue music. After attending a Steven Curtis Chapman concert in 1997, West decided to dedicate his career to singing and songwriting. He started as an independent artist, releasing three albums: “September Sun” (1997), “Every Step of the Way” (1998), and “Sellout” (2002). His early works helped build his foundation before he signed with Universal South Records.
In 2002, just before signing his major label deal, West suffered a severe arm injury that threatened his ability to play guitar and perform. Despite being told there was a low chance of full recovery, he persevered, recovered, and signed with Universal South Records on August 23, 2002. His debut major-label album, “Happy,” released in 2003, featured the hit single “More,” which spent nine weeks at No. 1 on Christian Adult Contemporary charts and was named Christian Song of the Year by ASCAP. He continued his career progression with “History” in 2005 and later faced vocal issues in 2007, requiring surgery and two months of vocal rest. A documentary, “Nothing to Say,” chronicled this challenging period, underscoring his dedication to his craft.
West’s career includes multiple Dove Awards and an American Music Award for Best Contemporary Inspirational Artist in 2013. His song “Hello, My Name Is” from the album “Into the Light” (2012) held the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Christian Songs chart for 17 consecutive weeks. He has also penned songs for numerous other artists, including Rascal Flatts, Billy Ray Cyrus, Mandisa, and Natalie Grant, showcasing his versatility as a songwriter. In recent years, West launched his own imprint, Story House Music, under Provident Music Group, releasing albums like “Brand New” (2020) and “My Story Your Glory” (2023).
