United States Maxim Adam Bemis is an American musician and songwriter, recognized as the lead singer and primary songwriter for the rock band Say Anything. He is also a comic book writer for Marvel Comics and performs in the supergroup Two Tongues and the project Perma.
Say Anything signed with Doghouse Records in 2003 for their second album, ...Is a Real Boy. Bemis, Conley, and Linder later collaborated on a Bob Dylan cover for Doghouse Records in 2006.
Say Anything signed with J Records in 2005 and re-released ...Is a Real Boy, with Bemis noting the label's belief in the album's mainstream appeal and providing resources for further touring and production.

Max Bemis was born in New York City in 1984, later moving to Hollywood, California. His early exposure to piano lessons cultivated an interest in music. Raised in a strong Jewish environment, his heritage and the experiences of his Holocaust-survivor grandparents have influenced themes in his songwriting, notably in “Alive with the Glory of Love.” At Camp Ramah in Ojai, California, he met future bandmate Coby Linder. In 2000, Bemis, Linder, and other friends formed Say Anything, releasing two EPs and a full-length album, “Baseball,” within two years. Bemis briefly attended Sarah Lawrence College in 2002 but left to focus on music, recording much of the material for the band’s early releases.

The band’s touring and progression were impacted by Bemis’s health challenges, including bipolar disorder and drug addictions, which led to canceled tours and lineup changes in 2005. Following successful rehabilitation, Say Anything signed with J Records in 2005 and re-released “…Is a Real Boy.” They embarked on co-headlining tours with prominent bands like Saves the Day and Hellogoodbye in 2006 and 2007, and participated in the Warped Tour in 2008. Beyond Say Anything, Bemis has engaged in various side projects and collaborations. He formed the supergroup Two Tongues with Chris Conley of Saves the Day, releasing their self-titled debut in 2009 and a second album in 2016. With his former wife Sherri DuPree, he formed Perma, releasing multiple albums. He also created Max Bemis and the Painful Splits, an acoustic project, and founded the imprint label Rory Records in 2012, distributed by Equal Vision Records. In recent years, Bemis has also established a career as a comic book writer, contributing to titles for Boom! Studios and Marvel Comics, including “Polarity,” “Evil Empire,” and “X-Men: Worst X-Man Ever.” He continues to explore musical expression with his project Maxim Mental and Say Anything, releasing “…Is Committed” in 2024.
