About

MercyMe, a contemporary Christian music band, was formed in 1994 in Edmond, Oklahoma. The initial lineup included lead vocalist Bart Millard, pianist James Phillip Bryson, and guitarist Michael John Scheuchzer. After relocating to Oklahoma City, Nashville, and then settling in Greenville, Texas, the band expanded with the addition of bassist Nathan Cochran and drummer Robby Shaffer. They spent their early years releasing six independent albums and performing at various venues, including the popular PlanetWisdom youth conference, building a grassroots following before securing a major record deal.

In 2001, MercyMe signed with INO Records, marking a pivotal moment in their career. Their major label debut, “Almost There,” featured the crossover hit “I Can Only Imagine.” This single achieved mainstream success three years after its release, topping the Billboard 200 sales chart for seven weeks and reaching significant positions on various secular charts. The success of “I Can Only Imagine” propelled “Almost There” to triple platinum certification, establishing MercyMe as a prominent act in contemporary Christian music. They continued to release successful albums like “Spoken For” (2002) and “Undone” (2004), further solidifying their presence with multiple Dove Awards and chart-topping Christian singles. In 2003, Barry Graul joined as a second guitarist, adding more depth to their sound.

Throughout their career, MercyMe has released eleven studio albums, with six achieving gold certification. They have garnered 13 consecutive top-five singles on the Billboard Christian Songs chart, with seven reaching number one. The band has been recognized with eight Dove Awards and multiple Grammy Award nominations. Notable album releases include “The Christmas Sessions” (2005), “Coming Up to Breathe” (2006), “All That Is Within Me” (2007), “The Generous Mr. Lovewell” (2010), “The Hurt & the Healer” (2012), “Welcome to the New” (2014), “Lifer” (2017), “Inhale (Exhale)” (2021), “Always Only Jesus” (2022), and “Wonder & Awe” (2025). MercyMe has also engaged in charitable endeavors, participating in benefit concerts for tsunami relief and partnering with organizations like Compassion International.
