Midland is an American country music group formed in 2014 in Dripping Springs, Texas. The group consists of Mark Wystrach (lead vocals, guitar), Jess Carson (guitar, vocals), and Cameron Duddy (bass guitar, vocals). Wystrach, Duddy, and Carson first came together in Jackson Hole, Wyoming during Duddy’s wedding in August 2013. The trio recognized their musical compatibility and decided to pursue a project, eventually recording an initial set of songs at Sonic Ranch in El Paso, Texas, in January 2014, marking the official formation of the band. Their music is often characterized by a blend of George Strait’s 80s New Traditionalist feel and the rich California harmonies reminiscent of The Eagles.
Midland signed with Big Machine Records on March 9, 2016, and released their self-titled EP, which featured their debut single, “Drinkin’ Problem.” This single charted on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs and Country Airplay. Their debut album, “On the Rocks,” released on September 22, 2017, featured production by Dann Huff, Josh Osborne, and Shane McAnally. The group received two Grammy Award nominations in 2018 for “Drinkin’ Problem” in the categories of Best Country Song and Best Country Duo/Group Performance. They also won the ACM Award for New Vocal Group of the Year in 2018. Subsequent albums include “Let It Roll” (2019), “The Last Resort: Greetings From” (2022), and “Barely Blue” (2024), all released through Big Machine Records. Additionally, in 2019, their album “On the Rocks” achieved Gold certification from the RIAA.
Beyond their musical endeavors, individual members have notable histories. Mark Wystrach was signed to IMG Models, bringing a background in modeling and acting. Jess Carson grew up on an Oregon farm, fostering an early connection to country music through his family. Cameron Duddy, in addition to his role in Midland, is an accomplished music video director, having won an MTV Video Music Award for his work on Bruno Mars’ “Locked Out of Heaven.” He has directed many of Midland’s music videos as well, including “Drinkin’ Problem,” “Make a Little,” and “Mr. Lonely.” The band continues to tour and release new material, maintaining their distinct style and engaging with their fanbase through various projects.
