Paperplane Pursuit was formed in 2009 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, emerging from the band Silent Scream. The group consists of John O (lead vocalist), Dru Yap (drummer), Isaac Ravi (guitarist), and The Chief (bassist). Their career began to gain momentum in 2010 with their single ‘Goodbye’ from their debut EP, ‘Malaysia 2.0’. This track achieved chart success in Malaysia, and its accompanying music video received daily airtime on MTV Asia by the end of 2010. The band distinguishes itself by independently creating and producing their own music, accompanying music videos, and operating their own studio, helmed by John O.
Following their initial success, Paperplane Pursuit dedicated 2011 and 2012 to live performances and various radio and television appearances. In November 2012, they released ‘Everybody Wants Somebody,’ the first single from their second EP, ‘Higher,’ which received regular airplay on local radio stations. This was followed by ‘Higher (Ah Song)’ in February 2013 and ‘What If’ in September 2013, both maintaining their presence on Malaysian radio. A significant milestone occurred in 2014 with their breakthrough single ‘Beat Of Your Love,’ featuring Malaysian artist Darren Ashley. Their single ‘Feel Good,’ released in July 2014, was consistently played on Malaysian radio into 2015, establishing them as one of the most frequently aired acts. This track also achieved international recognition by reaching the Billboard charts in the United States.
Throughout their career, Paperplane Pursuit has been a prominent act in the Malaysian music scene. They headlined the H-artistry event in Malaysia in 2014 and were featured artists for the Amplified: Music Made of More series by Guinness, alongside artists such as Howie Day and MAGIC!. Their contributions to music were recognized with the 5th annual August Man Malaysia Men of The Year Awards in 2014. In 2016, they further expanded their reach by supporting 5 Seconds of Summer at the KL Convention Centre in Kuala Lumpur during the Sounds Live Feels Live World Tour. The band continued to release music, including the full-length albums ‘Malaysia 2.0’ (2011), ‘Higher’ (2014), and ‘Second Date’ (2017), along with several singles that consistently topped local radio charts based on popular fan votes.
