About

Jordan Terrell Carter, known professionally as Playboi Carti, was born on September 13, 1995, or 1996, in Atlanta, Georgia. Raised in Riverdale, Georgia, Carter showed an early interest in music, participating in choir and experimenting with rapping under the name Sir Cartier in 2011. His early releases on SoundCloud showcased his developing style, influenced by artists like Wiz Khalifa and Gucci Mane. During his teenage years, he also developed a strong interest in fashion, drawing inspiration from punk aesthetics and frequently shopping at thrift stores. This early blend of music and fashion laid the groundwork for his unique artistic persona. By 18, he moved to New York City to fully pursue his music career.

In 2014, after adopting the moniker Playboi Carti, he signed with Awful Records. A pivotal moment came when he connected with ASAP Rocky’s AWGE imprint, leading to a joint venture with Interscope Records in 2016. His mainstream breakthrough arrived with his self-titled debut mixtape in 2017, which featured successful singles “Magnolia” and “Wokeuplikethis.” The mixtape peaked at number 12 on the Billboard 200, establishing his presence in the music industry. He further solidified his career with performances on ASAP Mob’s “Telephone Calls” and “London Town” in 2016.

Playboi Carti expanded his discography with his debut studio album, “Die Lit” (2018), which achieved commercial success and was followed by the announcement of “Whole Lotta Red” in the same year. Despite a period without new original music, he maintained visibility through collaborations with artists such as Tyler, the Creator and Solange. In 2019, he founded his own record label and rap collective, Opium, signing artists including Ken Carson and Destroy Lonely. His second album, “Whole Lotta Red” (2020), debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and was recognized by Rolling Stone as a significant hip-hop album. His third album, “Music” (2025), also topped the Billboard 200, featuring high-profile collaborations like “Carnival” with Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign, which became his first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100. Carti continues to tour and release music, influencing contemporary hip-hop with his evolving sound and distinctive aesthetic.
