Tara McDonald was born in Dartford, England, in 1976. Her early career began at a young age, showcasing her vocal talent. At nine, she played young Eponine in Les Miserables at The Palace Theatre London after an open audition. By age eleven, she made her television debut on BBC1’s “Opportunity Knocks,” performing as a solo singer and winning her week before appearing in the final. At twelve, she won the Danny Kaye Award for “Make Your Own Rainbow,” leading to a year-long role as a child ambassador for UNICEF, promoting children’s rights across Europe and Africa. She attended the Italia Conti stage school and later the BRIT School, performing in the National Youth Music Theatre’s production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat with Jude Law and in a musical called “St. Bernadette” at the Dominion Theatre in London. She also worked as a backing dancer for Karen Ramirez and the Jungle Brothers, appearing on BBC1’s Top Of The Pops.
McDonald’s career continued to develop through songwriting for other artists and session work. From 2004 to 2007, she provided lead and backing vocals on BBC1’s “Strictly Come Dancing.” In 2005, she co-wrote and sang “Feel the Vibe (‘Til the Morning Comes)” with Axwell. The song became a prominent dance track, reaching No. 1 on the UK Dance Singles Chart and No. 16 on the UK Singles Chart. Her collaboration with Armand Van Helden on “My My My” in 2006 also achieved commercial success, charting at No. 12 in the UK and in the top 30 of world dance charts. In 2007, she co-wrote “Delirious” and “You Are Not Alone” for David Guetta’s platinum-selling album “Pop Life.” “Delirious” peaked at No. 24 on Billboard’s Dance/mix show airplay chart. She also co-wrote and featured on “Get Down” with Todd Terry. She worked with Bryan Ferry on his “Dylanesque” album, arranging vocal harmonies and touring for a year.
In 2012, McDonald signed a three-album deal with Mercury/ Universal. The same year, she served as an assistant vocal coach on the first series of “The Voice” in Belgium. She launched a weekly radio show and released singles such as “Give Me More” in 2012 and “Shooting Star” featuring Zaho in 2013, which contributed to Zaho’s gold-selling album. “Vay-K” featuring Snoop Dogg was released in 2014, followed by “I Need a Miracle” in 2016, which became the official Europride anthem and charted in several European countries. She was chosen to sing the world pride anthem in Amsterdam for 2026. Later releases include “Taxxxi” (2017) and “Money Maker” featuring Zion & Lennox (2019), demonstrating her continued global collaborations and presence in the music industry. Her commitment to social causes is evident through her ambassadorship for various LGBTQIA+ rights and animal rights initiatives, aligning her professional work with her personal values.
