Few bands have bent American roots music to their own shape quite like The Devil Makes Three. Formed in Santa Cruz, California, the trio built a reputation on a sound that refuses tidy categories, folding Americana, folk, bluegrass, old time, country, blues, jazz, punk, and ragtime into one distinct voice. That willingness to blur genre lines has resonated with audiences far beyond traditional acoustic circles.
The band’s current lineup pairs guitarist Pete Bernhard with upright bassist MorganEve Swain and guitarist and tenor banjo player Cooper McBean. Across their catalog, they have released seven full-length studio albums and three live recordings, a body of work that charts a steady course from scrappy folk-punk beginnings to a fixture on the Americana scene.
In 2018, the group returned with “Chains Are Broken,” their sixth studio album, released on August 24 through New West Records. The record arrived more than a decade into their recording career, underlining a creative staying power few independently minded acts sustain.
From California coast stages to festival audiences nationwide, The Devil Makes Three continue to carry a wholly original take on American music forward, one show and one album at a time.
