The Sounds came together in Helsingborg, Sweden, in 1998, when classmates Félix Rodríguez, Maja Ivarsson, Johan Bengtsson and Fredrik Blond decided to form a band. Keyboardist and guitarist Jesper Anderberg, the youngest member, joined after a chance meeting at the Hultsfred Festival, and the group settled on its name months later during a trip to London. Before fronting the band, lead singer Maja Ivarsson had played electric guitar in other local acts.
Their 2002 debut album, Living in America, recorded in Stockholm, earned several “Best Newcomer” awards, reached No. 4 on the Swedish album charts and established the band in both Sweden and the United States. Follow-ups Dying to Say This to You (2006), Crossing the Rubicon (2009), Something to Die For (2011) and Weekend (2013) cemented their reputation, with their sound often compared to new wave acts such as Blondie, The Cars and Missing Persons.
Reliance on word of mouth and relentless touring has defined the band’s approach: more than 500 gigs since their debut, including the 2004 and 2006 Warped Tour, plus supporting runs with Foo Fighters, The Strokes, +44 and Panic! at the Disco. After the 2017 EP The Tales That We Tell, they released their most recent album, Things We Do for Love, in 2020.
