Shannon Busch, professionally known as WILSN, was born in Australia and established her musical career in Melbourne. Her early life involved a strong exposure to jazz, soul, and blues music through her parents, citing artists like Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin, and Stevie Wonder as formative influences. Busch studied jazz at the Victorian College of the Arts, earning a Bachelor of Music, which provided a foundation for her vocal style. Her stage name, WILSN, was adopted from a childhood toy.
WILSN’s career progressed with significant milestones, including touring internationally as a supporting act for The Teskey Brothers in the UK and Europe in early 2020. This experience, which involved performing in large venues to appreciative audiences of soul music, was a turning point for her, solidifying her commitment to the soul genre. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, she secured a record deal during lockdown periods, demonstrating her continued dedication to music creation. Her debut album, ‘Those Days Are Over,’ released in February 2023, received the Best Independent Soul/R&B Album or EP award at the 2024 AIR Awards. This was followed by features like a cover of Crowded House’s “Better Be Home Soon” with Budjerah in June 2023 for ‘Mushroom: Fifty Years of Making Noise’.
Her second album, ‘Bloom,’ released in October 2025, debuted at number 31 on the ARIA Charts and later won Best Independent Soul/R&B Album or EP at the 2026 AIR Awards. WILSN has also been recognized for her songwriting, with her co-written track “Give You Love” (for Jessica Mauboy and Jason Derulo) winning first place in the 2024 Vanda & Young Global Songwriting Competition. She was also nominated for Most Performed Australian Work and Most Performed Pop Work at the 2025 APRA Music Awards and a Songwriter Award at the 2024 Australian Women in Music Awards.
