Wintersleep is a celebrated Canadian indie rock band that emerged from Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 2001. The original lineup featured the dynamic talents of vocalist and guitarist Paul Murphy, guitarist and keyboardist Tim d’Eon, and drummer Loel Campbell. Their early years were marked by the release of two albums through Dependent Music, showcasing their unique sound and earning them a dedicated following. In 2008, they received the prestigious Juno Award for New Group of the Year, solidifying their place in the Canadian music scene.
The band’s journey continued with increased exposure and critical acclaim from 2009 to 2014. They opened for Paul McCartney in Halifax and released their fourth album, “New Inheritors,” which further established their reputation. Their hit song “Weighty Ghost” gained significant traction, being featured in films and television, including a memorable performance on the Late Show with David Letterman. This period also saw extensive touring, including collaborations with Scottish indie band Frightened Rabbit, enhancing their international presence.
In 2015, Wintersleep signed with Dine Alone Records, marking a new chapter in their career. They released their sixth studio album, “The Great Detachment,” featuring contributions from renowned musicians like Geddy Lee of Rush. Their commitment to innovation continued with the reissue of their early albums on vinyl, accompanied by previously unreleased tracks, demonstrating their dedication to their craft and fans.
Most recently, Wintersleep released “In the Land Of” in 2019, which was long-listed for the Polaris Music Prize. Their ongoing tours and new music releases reflect their enduring passion for creating impactful music, ensuring that Wintersleep remains a vital force in the indie rock landscape.
