Yul Vazquez was born in Havana, Cuba, on March 18, 1965, and relocated to the United States with his family in 1971. Growing up in a studio apartment in Miami, he was encouraged by his mother to explore the arts, leading him to discover his passion for performance. His career began not with acting, but as a lead guitarist for melodic rock bands Urgent and Diving for Pearls in the 1980s. Urgent had a minor hit with “Running Back,” reaching #79 on the Billboard Hot 100, and also contributed “Love Can Make You Cry” to the *Iron Eagle* soundtrack. After the music landscape shifted, Vazquez transitioned into acting, a path his musical skills inadvertently helped solidify when he landed the role of Flaco in the 1992 film *The Mambo Kings*.
Vazquez further developed his acting career, taking on numerous roles across film, television, and theater. His film credits include notable works such as *Runaway Bride* (1999), *Traffic* (2000), *Bad Boys II* (2003), *War of the Worlds* (2005), *American Gangster* (2007), and *Captain Phillips* (2013), where he played Captain Frank Castellano. In television, he is recognized for his recurring roles as Bob on *Seinfeld* (1995-1998), Victor Lazaro in *Magic City* (2012-2013), Petey Kilmer in *Severance* (2022-2025), and Yunis Sablo in *The Outsider* (2020).
Beyond the screen, Vazquez has a significant presence in theater, as a founding member and former co-artistic director of the LAByrinth Theater Company in New York City. He earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Play for his performance as Cousin Julio in the Broadway production of *The Motherfucker with the Hat*. His stage work also includes *The Last Days of Judas Iscariot*, directed by Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Terrence McNally’s *The Stendhal Syndrome*.
