Ada Martine Stolsmo Hegerberg was born on July 10, 1995, in Molde, Norway. She began her youth career playing for Sunndal Fotball alongside her older sister, Andrine. In 2007, her family relocated to Kolbotn, where she joined Kolbotn IL. Hegerberg made her senior debut for Kolbotn in 2010. The following year, at age 16, she achieved a hat-trick in seven minutes against Røa, becoming the youngest player to do so in Norway’s top division. She finished the 2011 Toppserien season as Kolbotn’s leading scorer and was voted the league’s Young Player of the Year. Her early achievements indicated a promising career.
In 2012, Hegerberg moved to Stabæk, where she continued to excel. She scored five goals in one half against Fart in May 2012 and concluded the 2012 Toppserien season as the top scorer with 25 goals in 18 matches. She also contributed to Stabæk’s Norwegian Women’s Cup victory in 2012, scoring a hat-trick in the final against Røa. In 2013, she joined the German team 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam, scoring on her Bundesliga debut. Her career progressed to Lyon in the summer of 2014, where she scored 26 goals in 22 league games in her first season, helping the team secure their ninth consecutive Division 1 Féminine title. This move marked a significant step in her professional development.
Hegerberg’s time at Lyon has been characterized by consistent high-level performance and numerous accolades. She was the top scorer in the 2015-16 season with 33 goals and played a key role in Lyon winning the UEFA Women’s Champions League, French league, and French Cup, completing a treble. In 2016, she was named UEFA Best Women’s Player in Europe and later became the first recipient of the Ballon d’Or Féminin in 2018. Despite facing serious injuries, including an ACL rupture in 2020 and a stress fracture in 2021, she returned to play and continued her scoring record, becoming the all-time top scorer in the UEFA Women’s Champions League with 60 goals in 62 matches by 2023. Her career has also involved advocating for gender equality within football, notably taking a five-year hiatus from the Norwegian national team in protest of disparities.
