About

Albert King, born on December 17, 1959, in Brooklyn, New York, established himself as a prominent basketball player from an early age. He attended Fort Hamilton High School in Brooklyn, where he was recognized as one of the nation’s top high school players. His talent was so profound that he was rated the top prep player nationally over future legends like Magic Johnson and Gene Banks during his senior year, earning him a spot on the inaugural McDonald’s All-American team in 1977. This early success set the stage for a distinguished college career at the University of Maryland.

At the University of Maryland, King continued to demonstrate his exceptional skills. In the 1979–80 college season, he was named the ACC Men’s Basketball Player of the Year, a testament to his dominance in one of college basketball’s most competitive conferences. His impressive performances led to him appearing on the cover of Sports Illustrated twice during the 1980 season. King’s jersey, number 55, was honored by the Maryland basketball program, and in 2002, he was named to the ACC 50th Anniversary men’s basketball team, recognizing him as one of the fifty greatest players in Atlantic Coast Conference history.

King’s professional journey began in the NBA after being selected by the New Jersey Nets in the first round (10th overall) of the 1981 NBA Draft. He played nine seasons in the NBA for four different teams: the New Jersey Nets, Philadelphia 76ers, San Antonio Spurs, and Washington Bullets. His most productive years were with the Nets from 1981 to 1987, highlighted by the 1982–83 season where he averaged 17.0 points and 3.7 assists per game across 79 appearances. After his NBA career, King played internationally for Olimpia Milano in Italy, contributing to their league championship in 1989, and for Hapoel Holon in the Israeli Basketball League. He also played in the Continental Basketball Association for the Albany Patroons, where he was named CBA Newcomer of the Year in 1991. Following his basketball career, King transitioned into the business world, becoming a Wendy’s franchise owner.
