About

William Shatner was born on March 22, 1931, in Côte Saint-Luc, Montréal, Québec, Canada. His parents, Anne Garmaise and Joseph Shatner, raised him in a Conservative Jewish household. After graduating from McGill University with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1952, he began his acting career in local summer theater. He performed with the National Repertory Theatre of Ottawa and the Stratford, Ontario, Shakespeare Festival, understudying alongside notable actors such as Alec Guinness and James Mason. His early work gained the attention of New York critics, leading to significant roles in live television productions. His film career started with a small part in the Canadian comedy-drama “The Butler’s Night Off” in 1951, followed by his first major Hollywood role in “The Brothers Karamazov” in 1958.

Shatner spent many years refining his acting skills, appearing in films like “Judgment at Nuremberg” (1961) and “The Intruder” (1962), and guest-starring in numerous television series including “Alfred Hitchcock Presents,” “The Defenders,” “The Outer Limits,” and “The Twilight Zone.” In 1966, he took on the role of Captain James T. Kirk in “Star Trek.” Although the original series ran for only three seasons, it later became a global cult classic. Post-“Star Trek,” Shatner continued to work in television, guest-starring in popular shows such as “Hawaii Five-O,” “Marcus Welby, M.D.,” and “Ironside.” The 1980s marked a resurgence in his career with the successful “Star Trek” feature films, including “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” (1979), “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” (1982), and “Star Trek V: The Final Frontier” (1989), which he also directed.

Beyond his work in the “Star Trek” franchise, Shatner starred in the police series “T.J. Hooker” (1982–1986) and showcased his comedic talent in films like “Airplane II: The Sequel” (1982) and “Miss Congeniality” (2000). He also achieved critical acclaim for his role as attorney Denny Crane in “The Practice” (1997) and its spin-off “Boston Legal” (2004), for which he won two Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe. In 2021, at the age of 90, Shatner flew into space aboard Blue Origin NS-18, becoming the oldest person to travel to space at that time.
