Known as one of the world’s most exciting up and coming rock climbers, Alberto Gines Lopez is a professional sport climber from Spain. In 2019, he made his senior level debut and finished on the podium in all three events he participated in.
Born in Caceres, Spain in 2002, Lopez showed an interest in climbing from a very young age. He was discovered by coach David Macia at the age of 10, and began participating in junior level World Championships in 2017. Winning several international youth competitions throughout 2017 and 2018, he continued his meteoric rise in 2019. He began the year by placing in the top three in multiple European Youth Cup competitions, continuing his considerable success in boulder, lead, and combined disciplines. In September 2019, he finished second in the top level IFSC Climbing World Cup event in Kranj, Slovenia. He then went on to earn silver in the European Championships held in Edinburgh, Great Britain and again finished second in the World Cup lead competition in Inzai, Japan.
Lopez has been training in anticipation of sport climbing’s Olympic debut for several years. One of the youngest and most dominant athletes in his sport, Lopez resides in Barcelona and has officially qualified for the Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
