About

Alexander David Bregman was born on March 30, 1994, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His early life was immersed in baseball, starting tee-ball at four and serving as a batboy for the University of New Mexico’s team. His grandfather, Stan Bregman, was a general counsel for the Washington Senators and helped the club sign Ted Williams, linking Alex to a rich baseball heritage. Bregman attended Albuquerque Academy, where he led his high school team to a state championship as a freshman shortstop in 2009, batting .514. As a sophomore, he became the first high school player to win the USA Baseball Player of the Year Award in 2010 after batting .564 for the gold-medal-winning 16-and-under USA National Team. After a high school career that saw him set a New Mexico season record with 19 home runs in 2011, he was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 29th round of the 2012 MLB June Amateur Draft, but chose to attend Louisiana State University instead.

At Louisiana State University (LSU), Bregman quickly made a name for himself, majored in sports administration, and played shortstop for the LSU Tigers baseball team. In 2013, he won the Brooks Wallace Award as the country’s best college shortstop and was named National Freshman of the Year by Baseball America. His college career was marked by consistent performance, including leading the SEC in triples in 2013 and stolen bases in 2015. He was a two-time All-American, and in 2015, led LSU to the College World Series, winning the Skip Bertman Award. He was selected by the Houston Astros with the second overall pick in the 2015 MLB Draft, becoming the highest-drafted position player in LSU history and the highest-ever-drafted player from New Mexico. He signed with the Astros for a $5.9 million signing bonus.

Bregman made his MLB debut with the Houston Astros in 2016, quickly establishing himself as a key player. He was part of the gold-medal-winning Team USA in the 2017 World Baseball Classic and later that year won his first World Series with the Astros. In 2018, he was named the AL Player of the Month in June, selected for the MLB All-Star Game, and earned the All-Star Game MVP award. He led the American League in doubles with 51 and finished fifth in AL MVP voting. The 2019 season saw him sign a six-year, $100 million contract extension with the Astros. He led the major leagues in walks and WAR that year, earning an American League Silver Slugger Award at third base and finishing second in AL MVP voting. He won his second World Series in 2022 and his first Gold Glove in 2024. In 2025, he signed with the Boston Red Sox, making his third All-Star appearance in his first year with the team.
