Nicholas Turturro

Nicholas Turturro Jr. was born on January 29, 1962, in Queens, New York, and grew up in Rosedale. The youngest of three boys, including his older brother, actor John Turturro, Nicholas came from a family with ties to entertainment and construction. His mother, Katherine (Incerella), was a jazz singer, and his father, Nicholas Turturro, worked as a construction worker and carpenter. After attending various Catholic schools, he studied theater at Adelphi University for two years. He left to marry Jami Biunno and raise their child, Erica, later divorcing. During this period, while working as a doorman at the St. Moritz Hotel in New York City, a connection through his brother John led to his first acting opportunity with Spike Lee.

Turturro’s career began with an extra role and voice-over work in Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing” (1989). Lee recognized his talent and developed a featured role for him in the subsequent film “Mo’ Better Blues” (1990), where Nicholas and John Turturro portrayed club co-owners. He continued to collaborate with Lee on projects such as “Jungle Fever” (1991) and “Malcolm X” (1992). This early work established his presence in film before he transitioned into television. A significant turning point in his career was his role as rookie detective James Martinez on “NYPD Blue” (1993), for which he received two Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

Throughout his career, Nicholas Turturro has appeared in a variety of films and television shows, showcasing his range in both dramatic and comedic roles. Notable film appearances include “Federal Hill” (1994), “Excess Baggage” (1997), and “The Longest Yard” (2005) alongside Adam Sandler. He has also taken on guest roles in series such as “Law & Order” and “The Twilight Zone,” and a recurring role on “Third Watch.” More recently, he has been seen in “Zookeeper” (2011), “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2” (2015), and the Oscar-winning “BlacKkKlansman” (2018). His consistent work in the industry spans decades, demonstrating a sustained career through diverse cinematic and television projects.
