Alex Cora

Jose Alexander Cora, born on October 18, 1975, in Caguas, Puerto Rico, developed his baseball skills at the University of Miami, where he helped the Hurricanes reach the College World Series three times. Drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the third round of the 1996 First-Year Player Draft, Cora made his MLB debut on June 7, 1998. He spent 14 seasons as an infielder with several MLB teams, including the Dodgers, Cleveland Indians, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Texas Rangers, and Washington Nationals. Throughout his playing career, Cora was known for his defensive versatility, playing at second base, shortstop, and occasionally third base and even left field. A notable moment in his playing career was an 18-pitch at-bat against Matt Clement in 2004, which ended in a two-run home run.

Following his playing career, Cora transitioned into coaching and management. He served as the bench coach for the Houston Astros in 2017, contributing to their World Series victory. His leadership qualities quickly led to his hiring as the manager of the Boston Red Sox. In his first season as manager in 2018, he guided the Red Sox to a franchise-best 108 wins and a World Series Championship, becoming the fifth rookie manager to achieve this feat and the first Puerto Rican manager to win a World Series. After a brief departure due to an MLB investigation, Cora returned to manage the Red Sox, demonstrating resilience and continued commitment to the sport. His career highlights include a total of three World Series championships as a player, coach, and manager, and twice earning a spot on the College World Series All-Tournament Team.

Cora’s career progression demonstrates a continuous involvement in high-level baseball, from his collegiate days and drafting by a major league team to becoming a World Series-winning manager. He also contributed off-field as a color analyst for ESPN and ESPN Deportes. His consistent involvement in the Puerto Rico national baseball team, first as a player in the World Baseball Classic (2006, 2009) and later as a general manager (2016-2017), further highlights his dedication and impact within the global baseball community. Despite challenges, including a suspension for his role in the Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal, Cora has maintained a prominent position in baseball, reflecting his deep understanding and passion for the game.
