Alexandra Breckenridge was born on May 15, 1982, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and moved to California at the age of 12. Her interest in acting developed at 13 through local theater productions, leading her to pursue a professional career in Los Angeles. She began her film career with the independent comedy “Locust Valley” (1999) and quickly secured guest roles in notable television series such as “Dawson’s Creek” (2000) and “Freaks and Geeks” (2000). She also appeared in feature films like “Big Fat Liar” (2002) and “Orange County” (2002). A turning point in her early career was her appearance on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” (2002), which led to an offer for her own UPN drama pilot, “Mystery Girl,” though it was not picked up for a full series. In 2005, Breckenridge took on the role of Michele Weinberger in the ABC Family movie “Romy and Michele: In the Beginning” and simultaneously began voice acting for the animated sitcom “Family Guy” (1999–2018), impersonating celebrities such as Cybill Shepherd and Christina Aguilera for 65 episodes.
Her career progressed with a lead role in the comedy film “She’s the Man” (2006). Breckenridge also had a significant recurring role as Willa McPherson in the FX drama series “Dirt” (2007–2008), showcasing her dramatic abilities. She later gained recognition for her roles in critically acclaimed and popular series. From 2015 to 2016, she portrayed Jessie Anderson in the AMC post-apocalyptic horror series “The Walking Dead,” appearing in 14 episodes across seasons five and six. Subsequently, she joined the cast of the NBC series “This Is Us” (2017–2022) as Sophie Larson, initially a recurring character who was promoted to a main role for the second season and appeared in a total of 35 episodes. In 2017, she received a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series for her work on “This Is Us.”
Since 2019, Breckenridge has starred as Melinda “Mel” Monroe in the Netflix series “Virgin River,” a role that has solidified her status as a leading actress. “Virgin River” has been renewed for multiple seasons, with Breckenridge continuing in her main role and becoming a producer for season 6. Her diverse acting portfolio also includes roles in “True Blood” (2011), “American Horror Story” (2011, 2013), and various other film and television projects. She continues to reside in Georgia with her husband, guitarist Casey Hooper, whom she married in 2015, and their two children.
