Alina Ilnazovna Zagitova was born on May 18, 2002, in Izhevsk, Udmurtia, Russia, to ice hockey coach Ilnaz Zagitov and Leysan Zagitova. She began figure skating at the age of four, and despite attempting to quit multiple times as a child, she pursued the sport with dedication. In 2015, she began training with renowned coaches Eteri Tutberidze, Sergey Dudakov, and Daniil Gleykhengauz. Zagitova quickly rose through the junior ranks, setting five junior world records and winning all major junior titles before her senior debut. Her early career demonstrated a remarkable talent and a disciplined approach to technical execution, which would define her competitive style.
Zagitova transitioned to senior international competitions in the 2017–18 season. Her breakthrough came at the 2018 Winter Olympics, where she earned a silver medal in the team event and, at just 15 years old, an individual gold medal in ladies’ singles, making her the second-youngest Olympic champion in the discipline’s history. Her performance at the Olympics included setting a historical world record score in the women’s short program. The following season, in 2019, she secured the World Championship title, becoming the first skater since 1985 to win the World Championship in her first season after winning the Olympics. This achievement also made her the second women’s singles skater globally, after Yuna Kim, to complete a “Super Slam,” holding all major ISU Championship titles at both junior and senior levels.
In December 2019, Zagitova announced a break from competitive figure skating, citing a need for personal growth and a change in focus. Although she has not formally retired, she has not returned to competition since. During her competitive hiatus, Zagitova has explored new avenues, including co-hosting multiple seasons of the Channel One Russia show “Ice Age,” and working as a commentator and interviewer for figure skating events. She has also engaged in various brand partnerships and pursued higher education in journalism, showcasing her versatility beyond the ice.
