Tom Petersson

As a pioneering bassist, Tom Petersson co-founded the legendary rock band Cheap Trick in 1974, simultaneously establishing himself as an innovator through the conceptualization and development of the distinctive 12-string bass guitar with Hamer Guitars. This groundbreaking instrument became a signature element of his playing style, a cornerstone of Cheap Trick’s sound, and has influenced generations of musicians. Petersson’s professional journey with Rick Nielsen began even earlier, collaborating in The Grim Reapers starting in 1967. This foundational period also saw Petersson secure a record deal with Epic Records as part of Fuse in 1969, leading up to the formation of Cheap Trick.

A dedicated guitar collector, Petersson has officially endorsed a wide array of prestigious bass brands throughout his career. These include Hamer, Chandler, Waterstone, Electrical Guitar Company, Hofner, and Mike Lull. He currently plays Gretsch basses, which feature custom signature models designed to his specifications.
