Allison Blackwell

Acclaimed soprano and Broadway performer Allison Blackwell garnered significant critical recognition for her powerful vocal performance as Violetta in ‘La Traviata,’ with The New York Times praising her ability to bring ‘real passion’ to the character. Blackwell’s impressive versatility became evident early in her career as she originated the role of Woman of Catfish Row and understudied Mariah in the Broadway production of ‘Porgy and Bess,’ which opened in January 2012. Further showcasing her dynamic range, Blackwell appeared as herself in ‘Love and Buns: The Hot Dog House’ in 2011, and went on to originate the roles of Joplinaire, Blues Woman, and Aretha Franklin in ‘A Night With Janis Joplin,’ which opened on Broadway in October 2013 before her departure in November 2013 and subsequent return that same month. Blackwell continued to build a distinguished career spanning both operatic and musical theatre stages.

Most recently, Allison Blackwell originated an Ensemble role in the highly anticipated and critically acclaimed Broadway production ‘New York, New York,’ which opened in April 2023. Her work also includes engagements with The Muny, where she has been acknowledged for her contributions to productions such as ‘La Cage aux Folles,’ further illustrating her sustained presence in challenging performance environments. Looking ahead, Allison Blackwell is set to return to Broadway, originating the roles of Sarah’s Friend and Ensemble in the highly anticipated revival of ‘Ragtime,’ scheduled to open in October 2025.
