Amy Louise Sedaris was born on March 29, 1961, in Endicott, New York, as the fourth of six children in a Greek Orthodox family. Her early life included a move to Raleigh, North Carolina, where she grew up and as a child enjoyed playing dress-up and creating plays for her family. Sedaris’s initial professional experiences included working at a Winn-Dixie supermarket and later as a waitress at Zanies Comedy Club. Her career path changed when she moved to Chicago with her brother David, where she studied at Second City and Annoyance Theatre. At Second City, she met collaborators Paul Dinello and Stephen Colbert, marking the beginning of significant professional partnerships. She left Second City in 1993 and relocated to New York City.
Sedaris’s television career began in 1995 with the Comedy Central sketch series “Exit 57,” where she collaborated with Colbert and Dinello, earning a CableACE Award nomination. A pivotal role came in 1999 as Jerri Blank in the Comedy Central series “Strangers with Candy,” which she also co-wrote. This series, based on a motivational speaker, ran for three seasons and was followed by a prequel film in 2005. Her career expanded with numerous guest appearances on shows like “Sex and the City” (2002–2003), “Monk” (2002–2003), and “My Name Is Earl” (2006). She also had recurring roles as Hurshe Heartshe in “The Heart, She Holler” (2013–2014) and Princess Carolyn in “BoJack Horseman” (2014–2020), which is widely regarded as one of her most notable voice roles.
In addition to her acting work, Sedaris has written extensively. She co-authored the text-and-picture novel “Wigfield” (2003) with Paul Dinello and Stephen Colbert. She released “I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence” in 2006, which spent over 12 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, and “Simple Times: Crafts for Poor People!” in 2010. Demonstrating her creative range, she created and starred in the TruTV surreal comedy series, “At Home with Amy Sedaris” (2017–2020), which earned two Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series. More recently, she has been recognized for her role as Peli Motto in “The Mandalorian” (2019–2023) and “The Book of Boba Fett” (2022).
