About

Andrea Mitchell was born on October 30, 1946, in New Rochelle, New York. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature from the University of Pennsylvania in 1967. Her early career in journalism began in Philadelphia, where she worked as a reporter for KYW radio, gaining recognition as the station’s City Hall correspondent during Mayor Frank Rizzo’s administration. She also reported for KYW-TV. In 1976, Mitchell moved to Washington, D.C., joining CBS affiliate WTOP (now WUSA) before transitioning to NBC’s network news operation in 1978. She quickly established herself as a general correspondent, later focusing on energy as NBC News’ energy correspondent in 1979, covering significant events like the late-1970s energy crisis and the Three Mile Island nuclear accident.

Mitchell’s career at NBC News has been marked by significant roles and extensive coverage of political and foreign affairs. She covered the White House from 1981 until becoming chief congressional correspondent in 1988. Her expertise in international relations led to her appointment as Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent in November 1994, a role she continues to hold. Mitchell also served as chief White House correspondent from 1993 to 1994. From 2008 until early 2025, she anchored “Andrea Mitchell Reports” on MSNBC, providing analysis and interviews on current events. In 2019, Mitchell received a Lifetime Achievement Emmy, acknowledging her contributions to journalism. She announced her departure from the full-time anchor chair of “Andrea Mitchell Reports” in October 2024, effective early 2025, but will continue in her roles as Chief Washington Correspondent and Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent for NBC News.

Throughout her career, Mitchell has covered numerous presidential elections, interviewed prominent global figures, and reported from various international locations. Her dedication to factual reporting and her ability to navigate complex political landscapes have made her a respected voice in American journalism. Beyond her reporting, she authored the memoir “Talking Back… to Presidents, Dictators, and Assorted Scoundrels,” published in 2005. In 2017, she and her husband, Alan Greenspan, endowed the “Andrea Mitchell Center for the Study of Democracy” at the University of Pennsylvania, supporting academic work related to governance and public policy.
