Former Australian footballer Andy Harper is now a well known print and broadcast journalist, writer, and biographer.
Harper played professional football for Australia, representing seven different teams in Australia’s National Soccer League over the course of his career. He played over 300 games, with appearances for Marconi, the Brisbane Strikers, and Newcastle United. Since he retired in 2001, Harper has become a key sports commentator and journalist. He started as a commentator on SBS while he was still playing football, and covered the 1998 FIFA World Cup on the channel. He then worked with Fox News on their coverage of the 2000 and 2004 European Championships, joining the coverage of the A League as an expert commentator in 2006. He has been a host and guest on various football TV programmes, including the Total Football Show and Kick Off. In 2004 he was appointed the CEO of Sydney FC, and became director of football development while he was with the club.
This sports personality has also had a career as a football coach, most famously training the players of Nerds FC. The team was formed on a reality TV show, in which young players were taught to play professional football in just 3 months. Harper is also a writer, and has also worked as a journalist and columnist in Australian newspapers and magazines. He has released three books, including The Socceroos: Voodoo to Destiny and a biography of Johnny Warren.
