Aneurin Barnard

Aneurin Barnard was born on May 8, 1987, in Ogwr, Mid Glamorgan, Wales. His first language is Welsh. He began his artistic journey at the Bridgend County Youth Theatre at the age of 11 in 1999. He later pursued formal training at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, graduating in 2008. During his time at drama school, Barnard participated in notable stage productions such as ‘The Caucasian Chalk Circle’, ‘Hobson’s Choice’, ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’, and ‘West Side Story,’ where he played the role of Tony. He also contributed to a radio production of ‘Under Milk Wood’. His early work demonstrated a foundational commitment to both stage and voice performance.

Barnard gained significant recognition in theatre for his role as Melchior in the London premiere of the Tony Award-winning musical ‘Spring Awakening’. The production opened at the Lyric Hammersmith in February 2009 and subsequently transferred to the Novello Theatre. His performance earned him the esteemed Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical in 2010. Following his stage success, Barnard transitioned to screen roles, appearing in HTV Wales’s ‘Jacob’s Ladder’ as a teenager and making guest appearances in TV series like ‘Doctors’, ‘Casualty’, ‘Shameless’, and ‘Y Pris’. He also featured in short TV films including ‘The Big Day’, ‘Night on the Tiles’, and the BAFTA Cymru-winning ‘Owl Creek Bridge’.

His film career progressed with roles such as Davey in ‘Hunky Dory’ (2011), where he performed musical numbers, and as photographer David Bailey in the television film ‘We’ll Take Manhattan’ (2012). Barnard further expanded his repertoire with lead roles in horror films like ‘Elfie Hopkins’ and ‘Citadel’ (both 2012), and the fantasy adventure film ‘The Adventurer: The Curse of the Midas Box’ (2014) alongside Michael Sheen. He portrayed historical figures including King Richard III in ‘The White Queen’ (2013) and Prince Boris Drubetskoy in the BBC’s ‘War and Peace’ (2016), which earned him a BAFTA Cymru nomination. His performances in major productions like ‘Dunkirk’ (2017) as Gibson, ‘Time’ (2021) as Bernard, and ‘1899’ (2022) as Daniel Solace highlight his consistent presence in notable projects across film and television. He also joined the cast of ‘Doctor Who’ in 2024 as Roger ap Gwilliam.
