Annie Murphy was born Anne Frances Murphy on December 19, 1986, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Her early life was marked by a passion for performance, leading her to attend Elmwood School in Ottawa, where she participated in stage productions. She pursued higher education in theatre, earning a degree in theatre performance from Concordia University, following a year at Queen’s University. Further refining her craft, Murphy trained at the Canadian Film Centre Actors’ Conservatory before moving to Los Angeles at age 22 to advance her acting career.
Murphy’s early career involved various small and extra roles in Canadian and American film and television projects. Her acting debut was in the crime-thriller television film ‘Lethal Obsession’ (2007). She appeared in films such as ‘Story of Jen’ (2008) and ‘Lick’ (2010), and TV series including ‘Blue Mountain State’ (2010) and ‘Beauty & the Beast’ (2012). A significant turning point came in 2013 when, considering leaving acting, she successfully auditioned for the role of Alexis Rose in the CBC sitcom ‘Schitt’s Creek.’ This role, spanning six seasons from 2015 to 2020, brought her widespread recognition and critical acclaim.
Her performance as Alexis Rose earned her various accolades, including a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 2020 and a Golden Globe Award nomination. Following ‘Schitt’s Creek,’ Murphy continued to expand her acting portfolio, starring in the dark comedy series ‘Kevin Can F**k Himself’ (2021–2022) and appearing in the second season of ‘Russian Doll’ (2022). She also featured in the ‘Black Mirror’ episode ‘Joan Is Awful’ (2023) and lent her voice to the animated film ‘Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken’ (2023). Murphy has also engaged in activism, serving as an ambassador for Care Canada and supporting homelessness initiatives.
