Born in Summerhill, Dublin, on October 18, 1992, Barry Keoghan’s early life included spending seven years in foster care, residing in various homes before being raised by his grandmother. His interest in performing began with school plays and later led him to study acting at The Factory, a drama school in Dublin. Keoghan’s professional acting career started in 2011 with a small role in the crime film “Between the Canals” and an appearance in the Irish soap opera “Fair City.” He gained wider recognition in Ireland with his role as Wayne in “Love/Hate” in 2013, which helped him secure roles in larger productions. Initial film credits included “’71” (2014), “Mammal” (2016), and “Trespass Against Us” (2016).
Keoghan’s career saw significant progression in 2017 with his roles in Christopher Nolan’s war epic “Dunkirk” as George Mills and Yorgos Lanthimos’s psychological thriller “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” as Martin Lang, where he starred alongside Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman. His performance in “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” earned him an Irish Film and Television Award for Best Supporting Actor. The following year, he appeared in “Black ’47” (2018) and “American Animals” (2018). In 2019, he was nominated for the BAFTA Rising Star Award and continued to expand his television work with an appearance in the HBO miniseries “Chernobyl.” Keoghan also featured in the fantasy film “The Green Knight” (2021) and joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Druig in “Eternals” (2021), diversifying his portfolio into major franchise productions.
The early 2020s marked a period of significant critical success for Keoghan. In 2022, he had a cameo as the Unseen Arkham Prisoner (later confirmed as the Joker) in Matt Reeves’ “The Batman.” His role as Dominic Kearney in Martin McDonagh’s “The Banshees of Inisherin” (2022) garnered an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor and he won the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. This was followed by his lead role as Oliver Quick in Emerald Fennell’s psychological drama “Saltburn” (2023), which earned him Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for Best Actor. Upcoming projects include the film “Bird” (2024), a role in the “Untitled Peaky Blinders Film,” and being cast as Ringo Starr in a series of four interconnected biopics about The Beatles, scheduled for release in 2028. Beyond his acting, Keoghan is an accomplished amateur boxer and serves as a brand ambassador for various companies.
