Arlo James White, born on June 2, 1973, in Leicester, England, began his broadcasting career at the age of 27. He gained initial experience covering non-league football for Radio Derby and during his travels in Australia. In 2001, White joined the BBC, where he presented Five Live’s Sport on Five and served as Five Live Breakfast’s sports reporter from 2002 to 2005. His early career at the BBC also included commentating on significant events such as Super Bowl XLII in February 2008 for Radio 5 Live.
White transitioned to Major League Soccer in 2010, becoming the sole commentator for the Seattle Sounders FC. His association with the team began in 2009 when he substituted for Kevin Calabro. His commentary skills were recognized by MLS commissioner Don Garber, leading to his appointment as the play-by-play commentator for all MLS and US National Team games on NBC and NBC Sports Network in March 2012. During the 2012 Olympic Games in London, he served as the lead football play-by-play commentator for NBC, covering all matches involving the US women’s national team. In March 2020, White also became the play-by-play commentator for the Chicago Fire, a role he maintained despite subsequent career changes.
A significant career turning point occurred in 2013 when NBC secured the rights to the Premier League. White moved from MLS broadcasts to become the network’s lead Premier League voice, based in the United Kingdom. He worked alongside co-commentators like Lee Dixon and Graeme Le Saux. Although he returned to MLS for several playoff matches in 2013, he focused on full-time Premier League commentary from 2014 until the 2022–2023 season, when Peter Drury succeeded him. Beyond sports broadcasting, White has appeared as himself in the Apple TV+ series *Ted Lasso*, commentating on AFC Richmond matches, following his involvement in NBC Sports promotional videos that inspired the show. In 2022, he also became the inaugural voice of the LIV Golf tour, taking on the role of lead play-by-play commentator.
