Arthur Joseph Rooney II was born on September 14, 1952, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as the eldest of nine children to Dan Rooney and Patricia Reagan. He is also the grandson of Steelers founder “the Chief,” Art Rooney Sr. Rooney attended Gilmour Academy, a private Catholic boarding school, where he played quarterback for the varsity football team and was named team captain in 1969. He continued his education at the University of Pittsburgh, graduating in 1978 with a Bachelor of Arts in political science, and later earned his Juris Doctor degree from Duquesne University’s School of Law in 1982. During his time at Duquesne, he also studied at the University of Exeter in the summer of 1981.
Rooney began his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers as vice president and general counsel shortly after his graduation. He joined the team’s board of directors in 1989. In May 2003, he was named team president, taking over day-to-day operations while his father served as chairman. Under his leadership, the Steelers achieved significant success, including two Super Bowl victories in Super Bowl XL (2005) and Super Bowl XLIII (2008), with an additional appearance in Super Bowl XLV (2010). He also oversaw the transition of head coaches from Bill Cowher to Mike Tomlin in 2007. Apart from his team responsibilities, Rooney is active in the NFL’s governance, serving as Chairman of the Workplace Diversity Committee, and on the Legislative Committee, Management Council Executive Committee, International Committee, Health & Safety Advisory Committee, and the NFL Foundation.
Outside of his football career, Rooney maintained a legal practice specializing in corporate finance, sports law, and government affairs for two decades after being admitted to the Pennsylvania bar in 1982. He also served as a judicial clerk for the U.S. Court of Appeals from 2002 to 2003. Currently, he holds an Of counsel position with the law firm Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney. He is deeply involved in the Pittsburgh community, holding board positions with the Pittsburgh Public Theater, Saint Vincent College, Senator John Heinz Western PA History Center, and the United Way of Southwest Pennsylvania, as well as the Board of Trustees for the University of Pittsburgh. In September 2024, Rooney was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Law from the University of Exeter for his contributions to sports and business. He married Greta Kimball on July 13, 1985, and they have four children.
