Ashley Jini Park was born in Glendale, California, and grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where she later graduated from the University of Michigan’s Musical Theatre program. At the age of 15, during her sophomore year of high school, Park was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia and spent eight months hospitalized. Following her recovery, she returned to high school and was cast in the lead role of Millie Dillmount in ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie,’ an experience she has described as an escape from her battle with cancer. Park made her professional theatre debut in 2009 in ‘Miss Saigon’ with Music Theatre Wichita.
Park’s career advanced with her Broadway debut in ‘Mamma Mia!’ in 2014. She significantly rose to prominence for her role as Tuptim in the 2015 Broadway revival of ‘The King and I,’ which earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Musical Theater Album. In 2017, she starred as MwE in the off-Broadway musical ‘KPOP,’ for which she received a Lucille Lortel Award for Lead Actress in a Musical. A turning point in her career came with her portrayal of Gretchen Wieners in the Tina Fey musical ‘Mean Girls’ in 2018, which garnered her a Tony nomination for Featured Actress in a Musical. Her transition to screen roles began with recurring parts in television series such as ‘Nightcap’ and ‘Tales of the City.’
In 2019, Park was cast as Mindy Chen in the Netflix comedy series ‘Emily in Paris,’ a role that brought her international recognition and allowed her to showcase her singing talents. Her performance in ‘Emily in Paris’ led to her covering songs such as ‘La Vie en Rose,’ which became a downloaded TV song. She has since taken on roles in other notable television productions, including ‘Girls5eva,’ ‘Beef,’ and ‘Only Murders in the Building.’ In film, she starred as Audrey in Adele Lim’s directorial debut, ‘Joy Ride’ (2023), and appeared in ‘Mr. Malcolm’s List’ (2022) and the 2024 film adaptation of ‘Mean Girls.’ In early 2024, Park publicly shared her recovery from septic shock, highlighting her resilience.
