About

Paul Benjamin Mendelsohn was born on April 3, 1969, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, to Carole Ann Ferguson, a nurse, and Frederick Arthur Oscar Mendelsohn, a medical researcher. His early life included periods living in Europe and the United States before his family returned to Melbourne for his primary schooling. He attended Heidelberg Primary School, Eltham High School, and Banyule High. Mendelsohn started acting as a teenager, securing roles in Australian television, including “The Henderson Kids” (1985) and the soap opera “Neighbours” (1985). His breakthrough came with the acclaimed coming-of-age film “The Year My Voice Broke” (1987), for which he won his first Australian Film Institute (AFI) award for Best Supporting Actor.

Throughout the 1990s, Mendelsohn solidified his presence in Australian cinema with roles in films like “The Big Steal” (1990), “Spotswood” (1992), “Metal Skin” (1994), and “Cosi” (1996). He showcased his ability to play troubled young men and romantic leads. After a period of fewer roles around the early 2000s, where he considered leaving acting, Mendelsohn experienced a career resurgence. In 2009, he appeared in “Beautiful Kate,” and in 2010, his performance as Andrew “Pope” Cody in the crime drama “Animal Kingdom” earned him critical acclaim and multiple Best Actor awards from the Australian Film Institute, Independent Film Award, and Australian Film Critics Circle.

Since 2010, Mendelsohn has gained international recognition, transitioning to Hollywood blockbusters and critically acclaimed projects. Notable roles include John Daggett in “The Dark Knight Rises” (2012), his Emmy-winning performance as Danny Rayburn in Netflix’s “Bloodline” (2015-2017), and Director Orson Krennic in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” (2016). He has also joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Talos in “Captain Marvel” (2019) and the Disney+ series “Secret Invasion” (2023). In 2024, he took on the role of fashion designer Christian Dior in the television series “The New Look.”
