Kathryn McKinnon Berthold was born on January 6, 1984, in Sea Cliff, New York. She developed an early interest in performance, learning piano at age 5, cello at 12, and guitar at 15. She graduated from North Shore High School in 2002 and Columbia University in 2006 with a theatre degree. While at Columbia, she co-founded a musical improv comedy group called Tea Party and was involved with Prangstgrüp, a student comedy group known for elaborate college pranks. Her professional career began in 2007 when she joined the cast of Logo TV’s “The Big Gay Sketch Show,” where she remained for all three seasons. Concurrently, she honed her live sketch comedy skills at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York City, starting in 2008. These early experiences established her as a rising talent in comedy.
McKinnon’s career significantly advanced when she joined “Saturday Night Live” (SNL) as a featured player on April 7, 2012. She was promoted to repertory status in 2013 and became known for her extensive character work and celebrity impressions, including Justin Bieber, Ellen DeGeneres, Hillary Clinton, Kellyanne Conway, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Her tenure on SNL brought widespread recognition and numerous accolades, including Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in both 2016 and 2017. She made history as the first SNL cast member since 1993 to win this award. Beyond SNL, McKinnon has contributed her voice to animated series such as “The Venture Bros.,” “Robotomy,” “Ugly Americans,” “Nature Cat” (2015-2025), and “The Magic School Bus Rides Again” (2017-2021). Her film roles include Dr. Jillian Holtzmann in the 2016 “Ghostbusters” reboot, Jess Carr in “Bombshell” (2019), and Weird Barbie in “Barbie” (2023).
Throughout her career, McKinnon has consistently demonstrated her range and adaptability. In 2017, she was attached to star in Amblin Entertainment’s “Lunch Witch,” an adaptation of a graphic novel, playing Grunhilda. She has also branched into writing and production, co-creating and co-starring in the web series “Notary Publix” with her sister Emily Lynne, and the fantasy-comedy Audible audio series “Heads Will Roll” (2019). In 2024, she published her debut young adult novel, “The Millicent Quibb School of Etiquette for Young Ladies of Mad Science,” followed by “Secrets of the Purple Pearl” in 2025. McKinnon hosted the 31st Independent Spirit Awards in 2016 and the National Book Awards in 2024, showcasing her presence across various entertainment and cultural platforms.
