Benjamin “BJ” Flores was born on January 29, 1979, in San Francisco, California. His early exposure to boxing began at four years old, attending the gym where his father, Frank Flores, trained his older brothers and assisted Olympic coach Ken Adams. Before his professional boxing career, Flores excelled in amateur boxing. In 1997, he secured the National Golden Gloves light heavyweight championship. He further distinguished himself by winning the National Amateur heavyweight championship in both 2001 and 2002. Flores also displayed athletic prowess in other sports, earning an all-state selection in football and track & field at Willard High School in Willard, Missouri, and receiving a full football scholarship offer from BYU.
Flores made his professional boxing debut on May 3, 2003, in Las Vegas, Nevada, achieving a victory against Dallas Lane with a first-round TKO. His early career saw a rapid succession of wins, including TKO victories against Gabriel Taylor in 2003 and John Turlington in 2004. A notable draw occurred against Semisi Bloomfield in 2003. He continued his winning streak, including a significant win against Ali Supreme in 2006, where he claimed the vacant WBF All-Americas cruiserweight title. In 2008, Flores defeated Darnell Wilson by unanimous decision to win the IBF USBA cruiserweight title.
Throughout his career, Flores challenged for world titles. He competed for the IBO Cruiserweight Championship in 2010 against Danny Green, resulting in his first professional loss by unanimous decision. In 2015, he faced Beibut Shumenov for the interim WBA World cruiserweight title, losing by unanimous decision. In 2016, he challenged Tony Bellew for the WBC cruiserweight world title. His last professional fight was in 2018 against Trevor Bryan for the vacant interim WBA heavyweight title. After concluding his fighting career, Flores transitioned into a role as a ringside analyst for Premier Boxing Champions on NBC and as a boxing trainer, notably working with professional boxer Jake Paul from 2021 to 2023, and other social media personalities.
